Halliburton Hit by Cyberattack

Oilfield Services Giant's Houston Campus Affected

Attack Impacts Global Operations

HOUSTON, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Top US oilfield services firm Halliburton Co (HALN.N) was hit by a cyberattack on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The attack is affecting business operations at Halliburton's giant Houston campus and some global locations, the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Halliburton did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The attack is the latest in a string of cyberattacks on major energy companies in recent months.

  • In May, Colonial Pipeline, the largest fuel pipeline in the United States, was hit by a ransomware attack that shut down operations for several days.
  • In June, JBS, the world's largest meatpacker, was hit by a ransomware attack that disrupted operations in several countries.

The increasing frequency of cyberattacks on energy companies is a major concern for the industry and the US government.

Cybersecurity experts say that energy companies are attractive targets for hackers because they often have large amounts of sensitive data and control critical infrastructure.
